The following is the email I received from Leah Lovequist at the Slave Lake Wildfire Management Area.

More updates may have been issued since 5:30pm since people have begun evacuating the community as of about 8pm.

5:30 pm Wildfire Update for Slave Lake. Two active wildfires.

Update on wildfire burning on north end of North Wabasca Lake as of 530pm May 24

As of 5:30 pm the wildfire has challenged the fire guard is growing. For evacuation information call Bigstone 780-891-0518 or MD of Opportunity 780-891-8719.

MD of Opportunity is asking that MD residents go to the Lakeview Sports Centre and residents of Bigstone Cree Nation 166C to go to Oski Pasikoniwew Kamik School.

  1. People on Facebook are reporting that a community wide evacuation has be recommended by Alberta SRD. Residents are to travel south to Calling Lake and register their family at the MD of Opportunity Field House. People are reporting they have already arrived in Calling Lake. Travel through Slave Lake is not recommended because another fire is threatening Highway 2 south of Slave Lake near south Mitsu.

  2. E-mial: Update on wildfire burning on north end of North Wabasca Lake as of 9:30 pm May 24

    The wildfire at the north end of North Wabasca Lake is classified as out of control and the estimated size is 275 hectares. At this time, dozers are working on building fire guard on the west and south side of the wildfire and they will be working through the night. Airtankers will return to the wildfire in the early morning. Residents have been evacuated and a reception center has been set up at the Calling Lake Multiplex.
